Electrical motors and their classifications

You may not see electrical motors everyday like other devices like mobile phones, laptops or light bulbs, but, that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. You can’t see them because they are not like them. These are small devices that are fit inside any electric appliance. The purpose of this device is to turn electrical energy into mechanical energy so as to run the machine. For this, the device uses magnetism and electric currents. 

Unlike, early days the size of electrical motors is reducing day by day, enabling them to get fit into any complicated and small appliance. There are two basic types of electrical motors:

AC motors: These motors are driven by alternate current. You can find two main types of AC motors – Induction motor and Synchronous motor. Induction motor runs slightly slower than the supply frequency. It is named so because the magnetic field on the rotor of this device is created by an induced current. 

DC motors: These motors can rotate exactly at the supply of the frequency or a sub-multiple of the supply frequency as they do not rely on induction. In this device, the magnetic field on the rotor is generated either by current delivered by the slip rings or by a permanent magnet. 

Other motors: There are many other types of motors that include Eddy current motors and AC/DC mechanically commutated machines in which speed depends on voltage and winding connection.
Each of the motor types has its uses and benefits. With the advancements of electrical motors many appliances are now much more advance, powerful and more efficient.
