Why Three Phase Motors Are More Popular?

Before three phase motors were launched single phase motors were ruling the market. Three phase motors being compact, economical and more efficient soon replaced single phase motors having same voltage class and rating. Hence, single phase AC motors are rarely manufactured.

Three phase motors are designed very simple, yet have high starting torque and extraordinary efficiency. These motors distribute electric power in the form of 3-phase AC. It uses three conductors that help it to provide 173% more power compared to the two conductors of a single-phase system. Three-phase technique empowers heavy duty industrial equipments to perform more efficiently and effortlessly. Plus point with these three phase power that it can be transmitted over long distances using smaller conductor size.

These motors have large numbers of versatile applications in the industries. Three phase pumps, blowers, fans, compressors, conveyor drives, farm machinery, saws, machine tools and similar other types of three phase motor-driven devices. There are huge benefits of using a three phase electric motors if compared with a single phase electric motor. These motors save a lot of energy and helps equipments operate smoothly. One of the most common examples is the large air conditioning equipment units above 2.5 tons (8.8 kW) cooling capacity that uses three phase motors for saving money and better performance. Besides all, they require very less maintenance and are perfect for tool where dust is prevalent. They also last very long. If used under normal operating conditions, these motors last for at least ten years. Perhaps, these are the reasons that make three phase motors popular for industrial use.
